How B Vitamins Improve Brain Health, Cognition, Psychiatric Problems and Mood Disorders

By Dr. Mercola

It’s well-established that healthy fats such as animal-based omega-3s — especially DHA — are vitally important for your brain health, but other nutrients such as vitamins are also necessary for cognition and the prevention of neurological disease and mental disorders.

Psychiatry typically relies on drugs as a first line of treatment, but even more severe psychiatric problems have been shown to benefit greatly from nutritional interventions.

One nutritional deficiency in particular that has the potential to wreak havoc on your psyche is niacin (vitamin B3). Continue reading

Why You Should Soak Nuts Before Eating Them?

by Dr Janardhana Hebbar

Soaking helps to get rid of phytic acid and neutralizing enzyme inhibitors enabling easy digestion and elevating absorption of vitamins and other nutrients in the nuts. The peels are more easily removable, once you soak nuts in hot water. Adding a little salt while soaking will help neutralize the enzymes. It also helps remove dust residue and tannins. The water residue from the soaked nuts must not be re-used for cooking as they might contain harmful substances.

Just like grains, nuts contain phytic acid which is part of their defense mechanism to avoid predators so that they can grow to their full maturity. Often, you may find some bits of nuts in your stools because phytic acid works against easy digestion of the nuts. Soaking helps to get rid of phytic acid and neutralizing enzyme inhibitors enabling easy digestion and elevating absorption of vitamins and other nutrients in the nuts. Continue reading

Scientific Links Between Processed Foods and Depression

By Dr. Joseph Mercola

Research shows that the food you eat can have a profound effect on your mental health. So, regardless of your mental health problems, the importance of addressing your diet simply cannot be overstated.

In a very real sense, you have two brains — one in your head, and one in your gut. Both are created from the same tissue during fetal development, and they’re connected via your vagus nerve, the tenth cranial nerve that runs from your brain stem to your abdomen.  It is now well established that the vagus nerve is the primary route your gut bacteria use to transmit information to your brain, which helps explain why mental health appears to be so intricately connected to your gut microbiome 1 — the bacteria and other microbes living in your gut. The Hidden Weed Killer (Glyphosate) in Your BREAD (and Other Wheat Products)

Commercial wheat doused with cancer-causing glyphosate herbicide right before harvest… and you’re eating it!

Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/050583_glyphosate_wheat_bread_crop_contamination.html#ixzz3hPz6ua00Now that the World Health Organization has publicly condemned glyphosate herbicide as “probably carcinogenic to humans,” awareness of this insidious chemical’s contamination of the human food supply is suddenly exploding among health-conscious consumers.

Most people, however, have no awareness at all that commercial wheat products are saturated with glyphosate before harvest. They think glyphosate is only used on genetically modified crops like corn and soybeans. But it turns out that glyphosate is routinely used as a wheat crop drying chemical to speed up harvesting. (Monitor breaking news headlines on glyphosate in real time at Glyphosate.news, part of the new FETCH.news network.) Continue reading

Top Foods to Improve Gut Health and Stomach Acid Levels Naturally

by Raw Michelle

(NaturalNews) Digestive problems are not uncommon; it’s estimated that 25 million Americans will get a peptic ulcer at one point in their life.  Even children under 12 may have GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease), but instead of having the accompanying heartburn, may instead find themselves with a dry cough or have a hard time swallowing.

Add to this those who seek immediate relief by taking liquid or pill antacids to help stave off heartburn and other discomforts, and we’re a western world filled with gut problems and the many ill attempts to make it all better. Continue reading

Antibiotic Resistance Will Kill 300 Million People by 2050

By Dr. Mercola

Three problems with the US food supply that is making food a source of disease rather than optimal health include: the way our food is raised; the way it’s processed; and the routine use of hazardous drugs and chemicals.

The United States is one of the few countries in the world that produces and processes food in a way that defies both science and common sense.

As noted in the featured TED lecture, 86 percent of every dollar you spend at the grocery store goes toward paying for processing and marketing of the food. A mere 14 percent goes to the farmer that actually grows the food ingredients in question.

This alone should tell you that that inexpensive processed food item you buy is hardly a bargain. Not only are you getting very little real food, as there are so many fillers and additives tossed in, you’re also getting very little in terms of healthy nutrition.

This is important, as your body is not designed to process and thrive on a base of disease causing ingredients like high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Bone Broth—A Most Nourishing Food for Virtually Any Ailment

Story at-a-glance

  • Bone broth has a long history of medicinal use. Traditionally, it has been associated with gut healing, and many modern diseases appear to be rooted in gut dysfunction
  • Digestive problems and joint problems in particular can be successfully addressed using bone broth, but it’s really a foundational component of a healing diet regardless of what ails you
