Elimination Diets for Colic, Infant Reflux
Many pediatricians will suggest you cut out a few of the more obvious triggers such as dairy, soy, wheat, citrus, chocolate, caffeine and acidic foods to see if your baby improves. When you cut out a few items at a time it can take months to find the items your baby may be reacting to through your breastmilk. The quickest route to determining if your baby is reacting to items in your diet is to eliminate all but a few of the items in your diet for a period of two to four weeks. At that point you will be able to tell if your baby has improved or not and then can begin adding things back one at a time so you can find out for sure what the culprits may be. Treatment of Baker’s Cyst:
The Response of Modern Medicine
Although some Baker’s cysts need no treatment and heal over time, this is usually not the case. Traditional modern medical treatment of a persisting Baker’s cyst involves measures ranging from draining the cyst, usually repeatedly, and/or surgery to decompress the cyst and repair any damage to the meniscus, a layer of cartilage lining the inside surface of the knee. The problem with both of these approaches is that not only do they not address the root cause of the condition properly, but surgery involving any joint, and especially the knee, is very invasive and prone to side effects, and may eventually lead to arthritis. Prolotherapy is a medical procedure that many chronic and acute pain patients, as well as athletes with sports injuries, are turning to because it is used as an alternative to surgery, arthroscopy, cortisone shots, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, and/or chronic use of narcotic pain medications. Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair the painful injured area(s) when the body’s natural healing process is not able to do the job on its own. In most cases, commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory medications and more drastic measures like surgery, joint replacements, cortisone shots, and other therapies may not help, and often hinder or even prevent the healing process.
Nearly all pain conditions can be successfully treated with Prolotherapy, including: Read the rest of this entry »

Bromides are a common endocrine disruptor. Because bromide is also a halide, it competes for the same receptors that are used in the thyroid gland (among other places) to capture iodine. This will inhibit thyroid hormone production resulting in a low thyroid state.
Iodine is essential for your body, and is detected in every organ and tissue. There is increasing evidence that low iodine is related to numerous diseases, including cancer. Various clinicians and researchers have found iodine effective with everything from goiter to constipation. Read the rest of this entry »

Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) are showing up everywhere. Traditional light bulbs we’ve all used are about to be a thing of the past. CFLs are another example of good intentions gone bad. It should really be called “Green Insanity”. According to the “so-called experts” CFL bulbs use 75% less energy and last about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb. The official US government website www.energystar.gov/cfls states the following: Read the rest of this entry »

If you’re taking “thyroid” for hypothyroidism-whether it’s the whole natural variety or the single-hormone, synthetic type-you’ve probably improved your energy levels, become a bit more alert, lowered your cholesterol and risk of atherosclerosis in general, and improved the health of your skin and fingernails. But unless you’re getting enough iodine, you may also be raising your risk of breast cancer by taking that thyroid supplement. Read the rest of this entry »

| Iodine is considered by many doctors and nutritionists to be the number one nutritional deficiency of today. Dr. David Brownstein notes that over 90 percent of his patients have iodine deficiency as the main source of their health problems. Back to Basics this month will explain why this is so and why supplementing our diets with iodine is essential today.

Iodine is a relatively rare element, ranking 62nd in abundance of elements on our planet. Prior to the great flood in Noah’s time, there were adequate amounts of iodine in the soil. After the flood, much of this trace element had been depleted from the soil and is now more concentrated in our oceans. The soil in coastal areas generally contains adequate levels of iodine while the more inland and mountainous regions have lesser amounts. Deforestation and farming techniques that lead to erosion of the topsoil also contribute to iodine deficient plants. |

Questions for Jonathon V. Wright, MD
Sweet Relief
Q: I am plagued by recurring bladder (and urinary tract) infections - also called internal cystitis - and often end up on antibiotics for them. Then I usually wind up getting a yeast infection. I’ve heard that cranberry juice is a good natural remedy for bladder infections, so I drink it like crazy when I feel the symptoms coming on, but it doesn’t always work. Can you suggest any other natural alternatives I can try? Read the rest of this entry »
